Best of Entertainment 2016

Here are my favorite books, movies, and music of 2016!

MOVIES

I love a funny movie. It is just so hard to find a clean one! Mom’s Night Out is now one of my top 10 movies. Even if you aren’t a mom, you will enjoy this!

This movie…. Blew. Me. Away. Wow. I don’t really know how to describe it but you just need to watch it! It’s funny, real, deep, and has an amazing ending.

I was so excited for this movie! This is one of my favorite bible movies! It’s about a Roman centurion tryimg to prove that Jesus is dead.

I don’t own this movie (yet) but I do have a poster! I was not expecting to love this as much as I did! Now I need to read the book:)

MUSIC

This wasn’t a new album for 2016 but it was one I literally listened to almosg every day. In particular this song above

However Bizzle did release a new album this year and evem though at first I wasn’t crazy about it, I really do like it now:)

Sevin is a newly discovered artist for me. He is a Christian rapper but he does rap about some rough topics so probably not the best for little ears. I did enjoy alot of the songs from this album this year:)

BOOKS

I have always liked Terri Blackstock but If I Run took her writing to another level. The story was so different yet amazing! The second to this series releases this year and I already pre-ordered it. If you like crime/suspense go for this book!

I have never met a Dee Henderson book I didn’t love;) Taken was a new release last year (i believe so anyways) and I was not let down! In my opinion…you can never go wrong reading a Dee Henderson book!! If you like realistic crime/police/FBI/suspense/romance genre then this is for you!

Francine Rivers is a new author that I discovered this year. I believe that there is not another author quite like her. This book made me get on my knees and praise God for saving me. True Christian fiction should be like this book. It should draw a reader closer to God and want to open up the bible.  This is basically a telling of the story of Hosea set in the 1850s.

As much as I love Redeeming Love, The Mark of the Lion series has to be my favorite from her. The first book (A Voice In The Wind) ripped my heart out and broke it into a million pieces.  The second book (The Mark of The Lion) was the continuation of the story and I finished it in a day. The third book in this series (An Echo In Darkness) was good, but it wasn’t about thr main characters and it is difficult to follow up after a story like theirs. If you like historical/biblical/romance/heroine/ fiction you will love this. If you don’t like those genres you will still love this;)

I never thought I would find an author I like as much as Dee Henderson…but I have.  Dani Pettrey is not as well known but her writing style and stories are incredible. The Alaskan Courage series was a favorite of mine but my favorite book in the series is Shattered. Hands down. If you like romance/mystery/adventure then read this series!

This book by Dee Henderson was definitely different from her usual story lines. But, I really really loved it. I will definitely be reading the second one when it releases! If you like true crime/mystery/political/small town murder/romance then read this

Once again I was really impressed with Dani Pettrey! Cold Shot was a bool tjay sat on my shelf for months before I decided to read it. It is so good! If you like crime/romance/suspense/action/history then read this

I only have this book out of this series. But Colleen Cobles Sunset Cove series took me by surprise to say the least. I had NO IDEA she could write such amazing mystery novels!!! All 3 books in this series were great! If you like mystery/suspense/crime/romance/beach life then read this series

A non fiction book that not only holds my attention all the way through but also ends up on my favorites list has to be good. Uninvites was more than good it was eye opening, funny, and relatable.

I almost didn’t read this book because I don’t like Ted Dekker.  The Choosing is by his daughter and I assumed her writing style and plots were going to be similat to his.. They aren’t.  She is very talented and has a writing style all her own. If you like dystopian/action/romance/future america type books then read this.

And that’s it! These were not in any particular order, and a lot were not new for 2016 but they were new to me:) I hope you found some good recommendations and if you have any favorite things from 2016 that stood out let me know!!!

May Favorites!

Summer is finally here!!! And with it, my May favorites! I have some beauty products and some random stuff that I have used a lot and enjoyed this month. Let me know some of your favorites in the comments!

So I actually read about 5 books in May but these two were my favorites♡♡ Dee Henderson never disappoints and Taken was one of her best. If I Run was…. I don’t even know. Outstanding. It was sooooo good! Although I didn’t know it was the first in a three part series:/ so I have to wait a year to read the second one:( This book was amazing though. One of the best I have read suspense wise in years.

This is Lunch Money from Colourpop. I have had this highlighter for about a year but I recently started using it again and fell in love:) It’s a pretty champagne toned cream highlight.

Another beauty favorite is this Wet n Wild blush in Rose Champagne. I am not a blush person. I just never reach for it and when I do its the same blush I have used for like, 5 years. Lol
But I seen this at Walmart and fell in love with this color! It is so different than what I have seen before. And the quality is as good as my Sephora blush (Wet n Wild never disappoints).

Considering this is the only eyeshadow palette I have used this month… there’s no need to say how much I love this palette. If I could only have one palette forever it’d be this one:) I did a review with swatches if you wanna check that out:)

image

I have been using this concealer on work days and whenever I just need to go somewhere real quick. By no means does it replace my Nars concealer but for every day, its a good option because its cheap and does a decent job:) A little goes a long way with this concealer and I love the coverage:) I got a shade too light for me though so I am going to purchase a darker one soon:)

My two favorite songs have been these two.  But I have been listening to Bizzle’s album Surrender nonstop. Every song is awesome:) Especially Better With You:)

Silenced by Dani Pettrey Book Review

Kaden McKenna is a tough, perceptive, and guarded person. To some she’s too much of a realist (and a health nut). But to Jake Westin, she’s mysterious and someone he can’t figure out.

Silenced is about Kayden and Jake finally working through their tense and awkward relationship. Throughout the whole Alaskan Courage series we see these two always at odds with eachother. Until Kayden discovers Jake’s past as a cop.. who lost his wife and child.

The two end up working together on a homicide case over a dead man Kayden found while rock climbing. She tags along with Jake to investigate because no one know’s rock climbing like Kayden McKenna.
As the two dive deeper into the complex relationships surrounding the victim, their relationship also becomes complex.

After threats are made ay Kayden and she gets kidnapped, Jake realizes that his past is catching up with him, but will he be fast enough to save Kayden?

Silenced surprised me. I did not expect Jake and Kayden’s relationship to be as relatable to me as it was. Kayden is a person who shuts everything inside and tries to be strong for everyone. She’s the mother-hen of the McKenna clan. I related a lot to Kayden and I reallt enjoyes seeing her transform and grow over the series. The suspense of this book was the best out of the previous ones… (I know I said that about the last book too;). But seriously though! Each book in this series is better than the next. Jake and Kayden’s relationship was cute in their own way and I can’t see them with anyone else..

Normally this is where I would share the “con’s” of this book and what I would change..  but honestly I wouldn’t change a thing!

Stranded by Dani Pettrey Book Review

Stranded is the third book in the Alaskan Courage series by Dani Pettrey. When I first started reading this book, I was still hung up in the previous book (Shattered). It wasn’t until I was about a third of the way through that I began to appreciate this story!
image

Stranded is about Gage Mckenna (an explorer) and Darcy St. James (a reporter who reminds me of Nancy Drew) working together to find Darcy’s college friend who has gone missing. Darcy discovers that her friend, Abby, was working undercover on a cruise ship called the Bering, but what for, Darcy doesn’t know. Gage begins his job as a excursion leader the same day Darcy boards the Bering when they find out Abby wasn’t the only woman to go overboard on this ship, (or murdered) they decide to work together to discover the truth.

So far, Stranded has the best mystery and suspense plot of this series. The story sn’t simple cases like the others were, but really in depth! I appreciatee that there was another twist (or three) in the case with each chapter!  It definitely kept me up late reading:)

Romance wise, the chemistey between Gage and Darcy wasn’t as cute and puppy love like as Piper and Landon’s was, but Darcy and Gage are definitely amusing together and honestly, just perfect together. Their relationship was cute in its own way because of the fact they are both stubborn,  independent, and at times sassy;)

Strandes was a lot, deeper than the previous books… not only because the case their working on is more intricate,  but also the issues dealt with. Like grief, death, love, questioning God, and even slavery.

I loved reading Stranded. It kept me up at night, made me laugh, made me cringe, and I related a lot to Darfy and Gage’s relationship together. I give this 7/10 stars. Honestly, each book in this series is better than the next, but Stranded was 5x better than Submerged (the first book) not only because of the character development,  but also because of the depth about her stories and characters.

Shattered by Dani Pettrey Book Review

I finished reading Shattered a couple days ago and have honestly been putting off writing this book review.. I just don’t want to leave it! I loved this book and am grieving because it is over:( So, with a sad heart, I will write this review and share with you my thoughts:)

First of all, with movies, the second one is never any good. That’s just common knowledge. But with books, books are different. They always seem to get better with each book! And that is the case with Shattered. Maybe it is because I got to know Landon and Piper previously in Submerged (the first Alaskan Courage book). But I honestly think it is because it was just a better book.

Shattered is about Landon (Yancey’s Deputy Sheriff) and Piper trying to solve a case that (Piper believes) is wrongly pinned on her brother Reef. With all evidence against them, they both set out to find the truth and hopefully free her brother from behind bars. Along the way they both start to face their growing, changing feelings about one another.

I must say that I love Piper and Landon’s relationship. They are two opposites, yet so cute together! Shattered was a little bit more focused on their relationship than the actual case, but I was totally fine with that because I could read about Piper and Landon’s interactions all day. I laughed out loud quite a bit in this book and at times, I got angry (it was Landon’s fault of course;).

As for the suspense and action side, this book wasn’t as suspenseful as Submerged, but it did have quite a bit of action. Piper life is put in danger more than once (which I’m sure she loves), and so is Landon’s. However, the book did seem to be dead-end after dead-end, until it all wrapped up in the last few chapters.

Even though it wasn’t as suspenseful as I had thought it would be, Shattered was way cute than I had anticipated:) Would I re-read this book? ABSOLUTELY! Do I miss reading about Landon and Piper’s adventures together? Definitely. (I wish Pettrey would write a series just about them;P) This is my favorite book of the Alaskan Courage Series… Have you ever enjoyed a book and it’s characters so much you didn’t want to move on? This was one of those books for me.. So if my review of Stranded (The 3rd book) is prolonged, don’t worry I’m just reliving my adventures from Shattered:)

Submerged by Dani Pettrey Book Review

Submerged by Dani Pettrey

It was by complete accident I found this book at my local library. I was actually bending down tying my shoes when the cover art caught my eye. (I do judge books by their covers…. lol). This book is about a young women named Bailey who returns to her hometown of Yancey, Alaska for her aunt’s funeral .Growing up in Yancey she had a reputation of being “easy”. However, once she moved away she had gotten saved and changed her life. But like most, her hometown won’t forgot or let her forget her old reputation. While there taking care of business about her Aunt’s shop, she meets her ex-boyfriend Cole. Cole and his siblings own a diving store and end up needing her help in a recent murder investigation (because of her knowledge of Russian history). The investigation ends up linking back to her aunt’s death. Overtime as they continue investigating, her and Cole see a new future together, in light of their past.

I really really enjoyed this book. Pettrey’s writing style is similar to that of Dee Henderson’s. She has a way of pulling you into the story and the character’s mind by the very first page. I love how there was romance that wasn’t cheesy. And that there was action throughout the story keeping me on my toes.

I have never had an interest in Russian history, and I have never been scuba diving. Both of these subjects are a big part of this book but being someone who knows nothing of either subjects, I felt “in the loop” on all of the character conversations and I closed the book feeling a little more knowledgable. 🙂

The only part about Submerged I would maybe consider a “con” is the fact that sometimes the main male character (Cole) played a little bit too much on his innocence. Not giving away too much detail, in his and Bailey’s past, she had cheated on him with another local boy. Cole had remained pure and because of that, I feel like he seemed too…. perfect. I feel like everyone has their faults and while he does show some of his in this book, I feel like Bailey’s was put out for all to see while Cole’s remained less serious. But, that might just be my take on it considering I am a woman reading this. My husband would probably see it right the opposite;)

I definitely can NOT wait to finish this series:):) I haven’t been able to find anything written by Pettrey at my local Hastings, Books-A-Million, or Barnes and Noble, which saddens me because this book was such a wonderful read and I’m looking forward to reading more in this series and by her. 🙂 This is a series that I would buy just to have on my bookshelf to look back through and re-read:) If you enjoy Dee Henderson’s books and style, you will love Pettrey’s!
